Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
