Roughly 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Officers report they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a individual discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they added.
Police then discovered numerous other marked vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police report initial examinations suggest the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; investigators are currently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
Local authorities said they were working "to solve the case" and have asked to the residents for tips.
A senior political figure commented the vandalism left him speechless and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This act affects the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a shooter targeting people of immigrant origin in 2020.
