European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Additional Updates in the News

In related judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
