The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the right to contest certain rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
